Brioche French Toast and Toppings Bar

Who feels like brunching hard this weekend?

We can start right here with THIS pretty little french toast. And that alone would be awesome, but what about we elevate it juuuust a tad and add in a TOPPINGS BAR? Sorry, didn't mean to yell, but I can get excited about the little things in life;)

So here is a list of 11 fun toppings. (psssst, you may want to save this post for the holidays *wink)

Topping Ideas:

  • Fruit Preserves: Heat your favorites over slow/medium heat until they're runny, then pour over top toast. Sprinkle a bit of confectioners' sugar

  • Flavored Sugar: Try sprinkling freshly made french toast with Vanilla Sugar or Lemon Sugar. You can also mix a bit of the flavored sugar into the raw eggs & milk before dipping bread.

  • Fruit: Raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, bananas, strawberries

  • Butter-ish: Apple butter, Nutella, almond butter, creamy peanut butter, all the butter!

  • Nuts: walnuts, pecans. candied nuts

  • Whipped cream

  • Lemon Curd

  • Sautéed apples

  • Powdered Sugar

  • Bacon, crumbled

  • and of course….Maple syrup

Simply make the French toast, pile it high on a platter, and arrange a few of these toppings along the side. Add a mimosa….and you have the start to a great day.

Brioche French Toast & Toppings Bar

Brioche French Toast & Toppings Bar

French toasts can be made with all sorts of bread, but brioche makes a delicious French toast because: * The bread is nice and thick and soaks in the perfect amount of egg. * You can actually taste the richness of the bread with every bite. * Brioche bread is naturally soft but not too soft. * Each bite will be custardy but firm enough to pick up with a fork.
Prep time: 15 MinCook time: 10 MinTotal time: 25 Min

Ingredients

  • 4 eggs
  • 1/4 cup whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 4 1-inch slice brioche bread, or thick-cut French bread
  • 1 knob butter

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, beat the eggs together well. Beat in the milk, nutmeg,  and vanilla.
  2. Layer the brioche bread in a single layer across a large baking dish (I use my 9-inch x 13-inch baking pan). Gently pour the egg mixture over the bread slices. Allow to soak for 2 minutes. Gently flip using a spatula. Allow to soak an additional 2 minutes. Tip the pan around if needed to help the bread absorb the egg mixture. The bread should soak up all of the egg mixture.
  3. Heat a large skillet on medium to medium-high heat. Melt a knob of butter on it. Gently transfer all 4 french toasts to the pan. Cook until the bottom is golden brown, about 3 minutes. Flip and cook until the other side is also golden brown, about 3 minutes. If you feel like your french toast is browning too quickly, turn the heat down.
  4. Serve immediately. Top with butter, maple syrup and fresh berries, or use your favorite toppings.
