Ingredients

Au Jus Sauce

Instructions

  1. Separate the tops from the bottoms of the rolls, and place the bottom pieces on a piece of parchment or foil.
  2. Spread on horseradish or horseradish sauce if using 6 slices of provolone cheese, then top with two layers of roast beef, crispy fried onions, and the 6 slices of Swiss cheese.
  3. Place the top rolls back on and spread the tops with butter.
  4. If making multiple layers, repeat the process and add a piece of foil or parchment between each layer.
  5. Pick up the foil and place the sandwiches into the bottom of the slow cooker. Cover and cook on high for 1.5 to 2 hours, turning your insert halfway through if your slow cooker doesn't cook evenly.
  6. If desired and your insert is broiler safe, place your rolls on the lower rack in your oven with your broiler on high for 30-60 seconds to crisp up the tops. (Watch continually and do not walk away. You can go from perfection to burnt very quickly in a broiler.)
  7. Cut into individual sliders and serve with extra warmed Au Jus for dipping.
  8. Before serving, make the Au Jus
Au Jus
  1. Whisk the Au Jus gravy mix with the Worcestershire sauce, 1 tsp Better Than Bouillon, and 1 1/4 cups water in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil, stirring frequently. If you'd like a thicker sauce, simmer it longer, and it will reduce.

Notes

  • This recipe is easily doubled if your crock pot is large enough for 2 layers of sandwhices.
  • Make-ahead: make this up the day before, covering with foil and refrigerating overnight. When ready, place in the crock pot.
  • Oven cooking method: Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish. Cover with foil and bake in the preheated oven until the cheese has melted, about 20 minutes. Uncover and cook for five more minutes.
  • To make gluten-free, use gluten-free rolls. Try Schar's Ciabatta store-bought rolls.
